Rio de Janeiro Hiking Tours for Every Adventure Style

Whether you seek gentle nature walks or challenging mountain climbs, there’s a perfect hiking experience waiting for you in this remarkable city.

Easy Accessible Hikes

Pedra Bonita is an easy-to-moderate 2-mile trail in Tijuca National Park that offers views of Pedra da Gávea and the coastline. This hiking tour is perfect for beginners and families arriving in Rio who want to experience stunning views without excessive physical demands. The trail features minimal elevation gain and well-maintained paths through the Atlantic Forest.

Tijuca Forest National Park features hiking trails that are accessible for various skill levels, including an easy hike that takes about 2 hours round trip. The Tijuca Forest National Park in Rio de Janeiro is one of the largest urban forests in the world, providing a lush environment for hiking and nature exploration. These scenic viewpoints are accessible within 1-2 hours of hiking, making them ideal for first-time visitors wanting to discover Rio’s natural wonders.

Intermediate Adventure Hikes

You’ve probably seen the photo — someone “hanging” off a cliff over the ocean. That’s Pedra do Telégrafo, and we’ll let you in on the secret when we get there (the drop is not what it looks like). The trail itself is a moderate hike on Rio’s wild west side, far from the tourist circuit, with views over deserted beaches that most visitors never see. We leave early to beat the line for the famous photo. Yes, there’s a line. Yes, it’s worth it.

Mountain Tours

About 90 minutes from Rio, the Serra dos Órgãos National Park is where we take guests who want real mountain scenery. On this full-day trip we hike the Poço Verde Trail — a forest path leading to a natural green pool where you can swim in mountain water — and the Postal Card Trail (Trilha Cartão Postal), which earns its name the moment the Dedo de Deus peak appears in front of you. Cooler air, dramatic granite spires, and far fewer people than the city trails.

Tijuca Rainforest full-day tours with waterfall swimming offer an immersive nature experience.

Our private rainforest tour provides an exclusive journey through one of the largest urban forests in the world, combining scenic hikes with opportunities to explore hidden waterfalls and diverse wildlife. Tailored to your pace and interests, this tour ensures a comfortable yet adventurous day surrounded by lush greenery, with expert guides sharing insights about the ecosystem and local culture.

Rio de Janeiro Experiences in Breathtaking Locations

Tijuca National Park

The green heart of the city. Rainforest trails, waterfalls, caves, historic ruins from the coffee era, and wildlife — toucans, monkeys, coatis — all inside Rio’s city limits. Most of our hiking tours in Rio de Janeiro happen here, and after 14 years we’re still finding new corners of it.

Serra dos Órgãos National Park

Brazil’s third-oldest national park, up in the mountains between Teresópolis and Petrópolis. This is where Cariocas go when we want cooler weather and serious peaks. The Poço Verde and Postal Card trails are the highlights we share with our guests.

Pedra Branca State Park

The biggest urban forest you’ve never heard of — even bigger than Tijuca. Pedra Branca sits on Rio’s west side and stays wonderfully quiet. Remote trails like these are exactly where having a private local guide matters most, both for safety and for actually finding the way.

Who Should Go on a Private Hiking Tour with Rio Cultural Secrets?

Honestly? Almost everyone — because “private” means we build the hike around you, not the other way around.

Families with children love Pedra Bonita and the Tijuca waterfalls: short trails, big rewards, and swimming at the end. First-time visitors who want to see Rio’s nature safely, without figuring out trailheads and transport on their own. Couples looking for a morning hike with a view they’ll never forget. Active travelers and photographers chasing Pedra do Telégrafo’s famous cliff shot or the granite peaks of Serra dos Órgãos. And return visitors who’ve already done Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf, and now want to see the Rio that Cariocas actually love.

If you’re not sure a hiking tour is right for you, just ask us. We’ll tell you honestly — even if the honest answer is that a different tour would suit you better.

Why Choose a Private Guided Rio de Janeiro Hiking Tour with Rio Cultural Secrets?

Knowledge

Our guides are Cariocas who grew up on these trails — not freelancers reading from a script. We know the history of the coffee ruins in Tijuca, the names of the birds you'll hear, and which viewpoint to reach before the clouds roll in. A hike with us is part nature, part culture, all local.

Safety

Hiking in Rio is very safe when it's done right, and doing it right is our job. We only run trails we've walked hundreds of times, we check weather and trail conditions on the morning of every tour, we carry first-aid supplies, and our vehicles are fully insured. You focus on the views; we handle everything else.

Our responsibility

Since 2012, we've treated every guest as our personal responsibility from hotel pickup to drop-off. Private means private: your group is never mixed with strangers, the pace is yours, and if you want to stay twenty extra minutes at a waterfall, we stay. That's a promise a big group tour simply can't make.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shoes with good grip (trail runners or hiking shoes — please, not flip-flops, we’ve seen it), lightweight clothes, a hat, sunscreen, swimwear and a towel for the waterfall hikes, and a small backpack with water. Our guides always carry extra water anyway, because someone always forgets.

We start early — usually around 8 AM — to avoid the tropical heat and the crowds at the viewpoints. Trails can be slippery after rain, so we adjust the route to conditions on the day. And skip the caipirinhas the night before; dehydration and tropical hiking don’t mix.

It depends on the trail, and we’ll be honest with you when you book. Pedra Bonita: if you can climb a few flights of stairs, you can do it. Pedra do Telégrafo and the Tijuca full day: moderate — comfortable walking for a few hours with breaks. Serra dos Órgãos: a bit more stamina helps, but we go at your pace. That’s the whole point of a private tour.

None. These are hiking trails, not technical climbs — no ropes, no equipment, no experience required. If there’s a tricky rock section, your guide is right there to point out where to put your feet.

Yes — Pedra Bonita and the Tijuca Rainforest waterfalls are our go-to hikes for families. Kids usually have more energy than the parents by the end. For Pedra do Telégrafo and Serra dos Órgãos, we recommend ages 10 and up. Tell us the ages when you book and we’ll suggest the best fit.

Across the city and beyond: the Tijuca National Park (including Pedra Bonita and the rainforest waterfalls), Pedra do Telégrafo on the west side, Pedra Branca State Park, and full-day trips to the Serra dos Órgãos National Park in the mountains.

Visit our Book Now page, choose your hiking tour, select your date and number of guests, and confirm. If you’re not sure which trail suits you, contact us first — we’d rather recommend the right hike than sell you the wrong one.
