10 Extraordinary Rio Tours Through the Marvelous City

Rio is a city you can see in a weekend, but you need a lifetime to really understand it. We are cariocas, born and raised here, and after many years of guiding travelers through our city we have a good idea of which experiences make people fall in love with Rio. Here are ten of them, from the postcard classics to the corners most visitors never find. All of them are fully private tours of Rio de Janeiro, just you, your group and your guide.

1. Christ the Redeemer by Train and Sugarloaf Cable Car at Sunset

If this is your first time in Rio, start here. Our Rio de Janeiro sunset tour covers the two most famous landmarks of the city in one afternoon, with skip-the-line tickets and private transportation, so you spend your time on the views and not in queues.

We ride the historic cog train up through the Tijuca Forest to the top of Corcovado Mountain, where Christ the Redeemer stands with open arms over the city. From up there you get a full 360-degree view of Rio: the lagoon, the beaches, the bay and the mountains all at once. Later we take the cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain and time it so you’re on top when the sun goes down behind the city. Watching the lights of Rio switch on from Sugarloaf is one of those moments our guests talk about years later.

2. Prainha and Grumari: Rio’s Wild Beaches

Most visitors only know Copacabana and Ipanema. On our Prainha and Grumari private tour we drive to the West Zone, where the city suddenly turns green and the beaches are protected from development. Prainha and Grumari have clear water, mountains coming down to the sand and far fewer people.

Prainha is a favorite with surfers, and Grumari is wide and calm enough for a long walk. It’s a great day for families with kids, since there’s space to play without the crowds. And we always finish with fresh seafood at a local restaurant nearby, the kind of long, relaxed lunch cariocas love on weekends.

3. Natural Wonders of Rio

Our Rio Natural Wonders Tour is for people who want to see the green side of Rio. Our city has one of the largest urban forests in the world, and on this day we show you how wild Rio can be.

We start at the lagoons of the West Zone, an area locals call the “Pantanal Carioca,” where capybaras and caimans live right next to the city. Then we head up into Tijuca National Park for the Chinese View (Vista Chinesa), the Canoas viewpoint, the Cascatinha Taunay waterfall and the Emperor’s Table (Mesa do Imperador), each with a different angle over Rio.

In the afternoon we visit two of the most beautiful gardens in the city. The Botanical Garden was created in 1808 by the Portuguese Prince Regent Dom João, beside a royal gunpowder factory, to acclimatize exotic plants brought from around the world. Today it’s a paradise for plant lovers, with its famous avenue of imperial palms, an orchid house, bromeliads, an Amazon section and a lovely Japanese garden. We finish at Parque Lage, where a mansion with a central courtyard sits at the foot of Corcovado, surrounded by forest, grottoes and trails. It’s one of the most photographed spots in Rio, and for good reason.

4. Rio de Janeiro by Night

For those who love the night, our private by-night Rio de Janeiro tour is your chance to see Rio after dark the way we do. Carioca nightlife is not about fancy clubs. It’s about samba, street parties and people dancing in the streets on a Tuesday.

With your private guide, we take you to the samba clubs and street gatherings where locals actually go, places you wouldn’t find on your own. We know where the music is good each night of the week, and we take care of you from the first caipirinha to the ride back to your hotel. This tour runs from Tuesday to Saturday.

5. Pedra Bonita Hike and Tijuca Forest

If you like hiking but don’t want to suffer for your view, the Pedra Bonita hike tour is the one. It’s a short, easy trail through the Atlantic Forest, suitable for most ages and great for kids. At the top you step out onto a huge granite rock with a view over São Conrado beach, Pedra da Gávea and the ocean. It’s the same ramp where hang gliders take off, so you’ll probably see a few of them jumping while you’re there.

After the hike we explore some of the highlights of Tijuca National Park, including the Cascatinha Taunay waterfall, the Chinese View and the Emperor’s Table. Bring your walking shoes and your kids, and come hike with us.

6. Santa Teresa: Rio’s Bohemian Neighborhood

For art lovers and anyone with a bohemian spirit, our Santa Teresa private tour is the perfect half-day. This hilltop neighborhood of old mansions and steep cobblestone streets is often called the Montmartre of Rio, and it has been home to artists and writers for generations.

Together we visit the famous Selarón Steps, the colorful tiled staircase that connects Lapa to Santa Teresa, then the Parque das Ruínas, a restored mansion with one of the best views of the bay. We stop at the Chácara do Céu Museum, walk around Largo dos Guimarães, the heart of the neighborhood, and look at galleries and street art along the way. There’s also great food up here, so come hungry. If you’d like, we can ride the historic yellow tram, the bondinho, one of the city’s sweetest little rides.

7. Historic Downtown Rio Walking Tour

For history lovers, our Rio city center walking tour is the most complete way to understand how Rio and Brazil came to be. In 1808 the Portuguese royal family fled Napoleon and moved their court to Rio, and for a while our city was the capital of the Portuguese Empire. Downtown still carries the marks of those years.

On foot, we visit the Paço Imperial (the old Royal Palace), the former Royal Cathedral, Praça XV de Novembro, the charming Rua do Ouvidor and the Santo Antônio Convent. We pass through Cinelândia and its grand buildings, see the Lapa Arches (the old colonial aqueduct) and step inside the Metropolitan Cathedral, a modern cone-shaped church with huge stained-glass windows that surprises everyone. And of course we stop at Confeitaria Colombo, a Belle Époque café with mirrors and stained glass, for a coffee and a pastry. It’s a walk full of stories about the people and events that shaped Brazil.

8. Little Africa and the City of Samba

Our Little Africa private tour is one of the most important experiences we offer, because it tells a part of Brazilian history that every visitor should know. The area called Little Africa, near the port, was where the history of Afro-Brazilian Rio began.

We visit the Valongo Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest landing point for enslaved Africans in the Americas. Historians estimate that hundreds of thousands of people, possibly close to a million, arrived here during the slave trade. We continue to the Instituto Pretos Novos, built over a cemetery where newly arrived Africans who didn’t survive the voyage were buried, and to Pedra do Sal, considered a birthplace of samba and a sacred place for Afro-Brazilian religions.

We tell you the painful chapters of this history openly, but also the stories of resistance, faith and creativity of the people who built this country. Brazil has the largest Black population outside of Africa, and you can’t understand Rio without understanding this heritage. If you want to go deeper, read our guide to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Rio de Janeiro.

To finish on a joyful note, we visit the City of Samba (Cidade do Samba), where Rio’s samba schools build their floats and costumes for Carnival. You’ll see behind the scenes of the biggest party on earth, and we keep a few surprises for the end of this half-day tour.

9. Ilha Grande Private Boat Tour

When you’re ready for a day outside the city, our Ilha Grande private tour is the answer. Think of it as Rio’s own Phi Phi Island: an island covered in rainforest with around a hundred beaches, many of them reachable only by boat.

This is a full 12-hour day with a private guide and a private luxury boat, so we go where we want, at your pace, stopping at the bays and beaches with the clearest water. You swim, you snorkel, you have lunch by the sea. It’s a more upscale experience than our other tours, and honestly, you deserve one day like this on your trip. Planning to stay longer on the island? Our Ilha Grande travel guides cover boat tours, hiking trails and more.

10. Niterói Private Tour

Across the bay there’s a city that most visitors ignore, and that’s exactly why we love our private Niterói tour. We cross the long Rio–Niterói Bridge over Guanabara Bay and discover a city with ocean beaches, colonial fortresses and some of the most beautiful views of Rio itself.

We visit Oscar Niemeyer’s Contemporary Art Museum, the famous building that looks like a flying saucer over the water, and a historic fortress that guarded the entrance to the bay for centuries. We explore the quieter ocean beaches and finish with a seafood meal. Niterói is always a nice surprise, and it gives you a view of Rio you can’t get from anywhere else.
