Romantic Places in Rio de Janeiro: A Guide for Couples and Honeymooners
I’ll let you in on something: Cariocas are hopeless romantics. We applaud sunsets. We name songs after girls walking to the beach. So when couples ask me — after 14 years guiding visitors through this city — where to find the romantic side of Rio, my honest answer is “almost everywhere.” But some places do it better than others, and this guide is my personal shortlist: the spots where I’ve watched couples get engaged, honeymooners fall for the city, and long-married guests hold hands like teenagers again.
1. Sunset at Arpoador Rock
Start here. Arpoador is the rocky point between Ipanema and Copacabana where, every single evening, hundreds of Cariocas gather to watch the sun drop behind the Dois Irmãos mountains — and when it disappears, the whole rock applauds. It costs nothing, and I’ve seen it move people to tears.
My tip for couples: arrive 40 minutes early to claim a spot on the upper rocks, bring something cold to drink, and stay for the twenty minutes after sunset when the sky does its best work and the crowd thins out.
2. Jardim Botânico – Rio’s Botanical Garden
The Jardim Botânico was founded by a Portuguese king in 1808, and walking its avenue of imperial palms still feels like entering another century. It’s quiet in a way Rio rarely is — orchid houses, shaded paths, toucans if you’re lucky — and couples naturally slow down here.

When couples tell me they want a beach day without the Copacabana crowds, I drive them west. Grumari and Prainha sit inside a protected nature reserve — no buildings on the sand, just green hills, surfers, and a couple of simple kiosks. On a weekday it can feel like a private beach.
Prainha is smaller and wilder; Grumari is longer and calmer. Do both — they’re minutes apart — and stop at the Mirante do Roncador on the road between them for a photo you won’t believe wasn’t staged.
5. Panoramic Views from Parque da Cidade
Across the bay in Niterói, the Parque da Cidade lookout gives you something no viewpoint in Rio itself can: the entire postcard at once — Sugarloaf, Corcovado, the beaches, the bay — laid out across the water. Late afternoon is the moment, when the sun sets behind the skyline you’re looking at.

6. Parque Lage – A Palace at the Foot of Corcovado
A romantic morning I never get tired of recommending: coffee in the courtyard of Parque Lage, an Italianate mansion sitting in a garden at the base of Corcovado, with Christ the Redeemer looking down at you from directly above. The grounds hide grottos, a small aquarium, and forest trails — and the café in the palace courtyard is one of the loveliest breakfast settings in the city.
7. Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas – Pedal Boats and Lakeside Evenings
The lagoon behind Ipanema is where Cariocas go to unwind, and it’s made for couples: rent a swan pedal boat, walk or cycle part of the 7.5 km path around the water, then settle into one of the lakeside kiosks for a drink as Christ the Redeemer lights up above the water. Unhurried, local, and quietly romantic — especially at dusk.
8. A Night of Samba for Two
Romance in Rio isn’t only sunsets — it has a soundtrack. An evening of live samba, whether at a traditional gafieira dance hall or the Monday night street samba at Pedra do Sal, is the fastest way to feel the city’s pulse together.
