Rio’s Biggest Festival? It Happens Every May on Copacabana Beach

When people ask me about Rio’s biggest festival, they usually expect me to say Carnival. And yes, Rio de Janeiro Carnival is enormous, spread across the whole city for days. But if we’re talking about the single biggest crowd Rio gathers in one place, on one night, for one show — the answer has changed since 2024.

Every year now, in the first week of May, Copacabana Beach turns into the world’s largest concert venue. One global superstar, one free show, and the entire four-kilometer beach packed with people from the sand to the buildings. As a Carioca, I can tell you: there is nothing else like it on Earth.

Copacabana: The Home of Mega-Festival and Events in Rio de Janeiro

Before we get to the recent shows, understand this: Copacabana has been gathering impossible crowds for decades. This beach is simply built for it — four kilometers of open sand facing the Atlantic, in the middle of the city.

The Rolling Stones played a free show here in 2006 for around 1.8 million people. Rod Stewart’s legendary New Year’s Eve concert on this same sand drew an estimated 3.4 million — still cited as one of the largest concerts in history. And the all-time record doesn’t even belong to music: when Pope Francis celebrated mass on Copacabana in 2013, around 4 million people filled the beach and the streets around it.

So when the world’s biggest stars choose Copacabana, they’re joining a long tradition. This beach doesn’t just host big events — it is the home of big events.

How It Started: Madonna, 2024

In May 2024, Madonna closed her Celebration Tour with a free concert on Copacabana Beach, and around 1.8 million people showed up. I remember the city that weekend — hotels full, the whole beachfront humming, and an energy I hadn’t felt since the biggest Carnivals. Nobody knew it yet, but a new tradition had just been born.

Lady Gaga, 2025: Even Bigger

The following May, Lady Gaga took the same stage — and the crowd grew to an estimated 2.5 million people. Think about that number for a second. That’s more people at one concert than the entire population of many world capitals, all singing together with the ocean behind the stage and Sugarloaf watching from the distance.

Shakira, 2026: The Tradition Is Official

This year it was Shakira’s turn, drawing around 2 million people to the sand. Three years in a row, three global icons, millions of fans — at this point, the May mega-concert on Copacabana is officially part of Rio’s calendar, right up there with New Year’s Eve and Carnival.

Who’s Next?

That’s the fun part — every year, as soon as one show ends, the rumors begin. Katy Perry? Adele? Cariocas love to speculate, and honestly, half the joy is the guessing game. What we do know: it usually happens in the first week of May, it’s free, and it’s on Copacabana Beach.

My advice if you’re planning around it: book your hotel very early (Copacabana sells out months ahead), expect the beachfront to be closed to traffic, and embrace the beautiful chaos. It’s crowded, yes — but it’s also one of the most joyful crowds you’ll ever stand in.

And Don’t Forget Rock in Rio in September

May isn’t Rio’s only mega-event. Rock in Rio — one of the largest music festivals in the world, born here in 1985 — returns this September at the Olympic Park, with multiple days of international headliners across several stages. If the May show is one giant night, Rock in Rio is a full festival city, with everything from rock legends to pop and Brazilian acts.

Between Carnival in February, the mega-concert in May, and Rock in Rio in September, there’s hardly a season when Rio isn’t throwing the biggest party on the planet.
