Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading in Rio de Janeiro
Time magazine ranked the Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading the fourth most beautiful library in the world — and after 14 years bringing guests here, I still watch first-timers go silent when they step inside. It happens every single visit.

ToggleThe Cabinet holds the largest collection of Portuguese literature outside Portugal: over 350,000 books. Built between 1880 and 1887, the building follows the Neo-Manueline style — a revival of the Portuguese Gothic architecture from the 16th century, the golden age of Portuguese navigation.
Look up at the façade before entering. Four statues watch over the entrance: Prince Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama, and Pedro Álvares Cabral — the three great Portuguese navigators — alongside Luís de Camões, Portugal’s most celebrated poet.

How to Get There
Our private tours at Rio Cultural Secrets include the Cabinet as part of our Downtown Rio itinerary. If you’re visiting on your own, the easiest way is an Uber Black or Comfort straight to the library — downtown Rio is not an area where I recommend wandering with a phone in hand looking for directions.
How Much Does It Cost?
Nothing. Entry is completely free, which makes it one of the best-value stops in the entire city. The Cabinet is open Monday to Friday, from 10 AM to 4 PM.
My Recommendation
Avoid rainy days if you can. When the weather turns, indoor attractions like the Cabinet and Confeitaria Colombo absorb all the tourists who planned to see the viewpoints — and the line to enter can get long. On a sunny weekday morning, you’ll often have the reading room almost to yourself.
