Where to Go After Dinner in Rio de Janeiro

So you’ve just had a fantastic dinner — maybe a proper churrascaria where the waiters kept coming with picanha until you surrendered, or one of Rio’s Michelin-recommended restaurants in Leblon or Ipanema. Now you’re standing on the sidewalk, it’s barely 10 PM, and you’re wondering: where to go after dinner in Rio de Janeiro?

I get this question from my guests almost every single day. And honestly, it’s one of my favorite questions to answer, because this is where Rio really shows its personality. We Cariocas don’t rush home after dinner. The night is just warming up.

After 14 years guiding visitors around my city, here are the places I actually recommend — the same ones I send my own guests to, and a few where you might bump into me on my night off.

Beco das Garrafas, Copacabana — Where Bossa Nova Was Born

If you want to understand Rio’s soul, start here. Beco das Garrafas is a tiny alley in Copacabana where, back in the late 1950s and early 60s, musicians like Elis Regina and the pioneers of bossa nova played in clubs so small the sound spilled out into the street. The neighbors used to throw bottles at the noise — that’s where the name comes from (“Bottles Alley”).

Today the alley has been revived with intimate live music venues, and the atmosphere is pure magic. One important tip from a local: the shows here usually wrap up around midnight, so this is a perfect first stop right after dinner rather than a late-late-night destination. Arrive by 9:30 or 10 PM, order a caipirinha, and let the music do the rest.

Blue Note Rio, Copacabana — Jazz With the Beach Across the Street

Yes, the legendary New York jazz club has a home right on Copacabana beach, inside the Copacabana Palace area of the neighborhood. Blue Note Rio brings serious national and international acts — jazz, MPB, soul — in a polished, comfortable venue.

I’ll be honest with you: it’s not the cheapest night out in Rio. But if you’ve just had a refined dinner and you want to keep that level of quality going, this is the natural next chapter. Check the lineup in advance and book a table — the good shows sell out, especially in high season.

Bar Vinicius, Ipanema — Bossa Nova at the Source

Ipanema is where “The Girl from Ipanema” was written, and Bar Vinicius sits right across from Garota de Ipanema, the bar where Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes used to drink and compose. Upstairs at Vinicius, there’s live bossa nova almost every night.

Is it touristy? A little, I won’t pretend otherwise. But here’s the thing — sometimes the touristy place is popular because it genuinely delivers. Sitting by the window with a glass of wine, listening to “Corcovado” played live in the neighborhood where it was born… my guests never forget that. I’ve had couples tell me it was the highlight of their whole trip.

Rio Scenarium, Lapa — For a Real Night Out

Now, if dinner ended early and you have energy to spare, Lapa is Rio’s nightlife heart, and Rio Scenarium is its crown jewel. Picture a three-story antique warehouse filled with vintage clocks, old pharmacy cabinets, and hanging bicycles — and in the middle of it all, a dance floor moving to live samba.

On weekends the shows go until around 2 AM, so this is your destination when you’re not ready for the night to end. My advice: go on a Friday or Saturday, get there before 11 PM to skip the worst of the line, and don’t be shy on the dance floor. Cariocas love it when visitors join in — nobody is judging your samba steps, I promise.

Rua Dias Ferreira, Leblon — Bar-Hopping Done the Elegant Way

Maybe live music isn’t your thing tonight. Maybe you just want one more drink, a nice atmosphere, and a safe, easy stroll. Then Rua Dias Ferreira in Leblon is your street.

This is where Rio’s best restaurants and coolest bars sit shoulder to shoulder along a few walkable blocks. The crowd is stylish but relaxed, the neighborhood is one of the safest in the city, and you can hop from a natural wine bar to a cocktail spot to a late-night bite without ever getting in a car. If your dinner was already in Leblon, you barely have to move — which, after a churrascaria, might be exactly what your body is asking for.

Emporium, Ipanema — For Those Who Miss Classic Rock

Not everyone wants samba or bossa nova, and that’s fine. If your idea of a good night involves Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, and a cold beer at the counter, Emporium in Ipanema is a Rio institution. The crowd skews 30 to 50 — people who know every lyric — and the vibe is friendly, unpretentious, and loud in the best way.

It’s the kind of place where you walk in as a stranger and leave having made three new friends. I’ve sent guests there “just for one beer” and gotten messages from them at 2 AM saying they were still going strong.

Botafogo — Rio’s Rising Star for Bar Lovers

Here’s a tip you won’t find in older guidebooks — though the newer ones are finally catching on. Botafogo has quietly become one of the most exciting nightlife neighborhoods in Rio, and travel publications and visitors alike are starting to take notice.

This is where young Cariocas actually go out. The neighborhood is packed with bars — craft beer spots, botecos with personality, cocktail bars, casual restaurants — and on weekends the streets are genuinely buzzing. What I love about Botafogo is that it doesn’t feel curated for tourists. You’re drinking alongside locals, hearing Portuguese at every table, and paying local prices, which are noticeably friendlier than Leblon or Ipanema.

If you want to experience the Rio night the way residents live it, skip the obvious spots one evening and give Botafogo a try. Come on a Friday or Saturday when the energy peaks, wander between a few bars, and you’ll see why this neighborhood keeps showing up in “next big thing” travel lists.

A Few Local Tips Before You Head Out

Use apps for transportation. Uber and 99 work perfectly in Rio and are inexpensive by international standards. After dinner and drinks, this is the way to move around, especially between neighborhoods.

Carry only what you need. Like any big city at night, keep your phone tucked away when walking and leave the fancy watch at the hotel. In Leblon and Ipanema you’ll feel very comfortable; in Lapa, just stay aware, stick to the busy areas, and you’ll have a wonderful time.

Timing matters. Beco das Garrafas and Bar Vinicius are early-evening spots. Lapa and Emporium reward the night owls. Plan accordingly — or do what my guests often do and combine two: bossa nova first, samba after.

Reserve when you can. Blue Note and the Beco das Garrafas venues often sell out. A quick online booking saves your night.
